A young man from Malda came with his 78-year-old maternal grandfather to my OPD with some urinary issues. On evaluation it was found that the old gentleman was having a prostate cancer. On further staging, it was found to be a curable form of cancer. Prostate cancer can be cured by either a surgery called Radical prostatectomy or a combination of radiation therapy and Hormone therapy depending on the cancer profile and other health parameters. Both the options have their own merits and demerits. We decided to operate and remove the disease from body in this gentleman. This surgery is a 4 -5 hour long complex surgery where the prostate is removed completely along with surrounding structures like Vas Deferens and all regional nodes and then reconstruct the urinary passage.

To do this kind of surgery on a 78-year-old gentleman, requires a lot of planning, counselling and support from family members. Now we are doing this surgery by Robotic technique. Thankfully we had a very supportive family, now this gentleman is under follow up since last 3 years, completely cured of cancer and no side effect/ complication of surgery. Throughout the journey the Naati (Grandson) was the most instrumental / key person in managing everything. His presence changed the outcome and changed the life of his grandfather.
