In Darbhanga a small town in Bihar, I was happy and satisfied with my life and job of a healthcare worker. All of sudden, one day everything changed in my life”. Said Mr. Rabbani. One day he noticed blood in his urine. Being a health care worker, he was well aware about its implications. Scared of a dreaded possibility that it could be …cancer? How come? He was just 32 years, young, energetic, god fearing man. He consulted his doctor and got all the routine tests done. Unfortunately, his fear changed into reality. It was a huge tumor in his left kidney. Further investigations were done and the CT scan revealed that it was a big complex tumor in the Left kidney and the tumor was extending into the main blood vessels draining blood from the kidney (Renal Vein). He was referred to a higher centre in Patna as these kinds of tumors require surgery which is a challenging case. Experts in Patna said it’s advance renal cell carcinoma and life-threatening condition, it will need surgery by a team of surgeons involving other specialties, which were lacking there. Shattered with the diagnosis, and not convinced by the opinion at Patna, he came to Kolkata to his friend and met Dr. Abhay Kumar.
In the first visit with Dr. Abhay Kumar, he was assured that things will be taken care of, and he will have a normal life. With counselling only, he started feeling better.
Whenever someone is diagnosed with any cancer it’s a most traumatic thing to happen to anyone. Physical problems due to disease, emotional issues, financial factors, family responsibilities, societal support everything has to be looked after.
In this case “Tumor was aggressive and big and had infiltrated into major blood vessel (IVC), it was adherent to the intestine and nodes. Though surgery is not going to be easy, considering all its facts and challenges, patient was counselled for surgery” said Dr. Abhay.
Intraoperatively, the kidney and the tumor were meticulously removed from IVC, surrounding intestine, and complete tumor thrombus along with left kidney and tumor and nodes were taken out completely.
Post-surgery recovery was smooth. Mr. Rabbani is now in regular follow up, leading a normal cancer free life. Life gave him another chance, and returned smile on his face again. This is the most satisfactory gift for any doctor –a smile on patient’s face.
